We are concerned parents, caregivers, and community members who are calling for an immediate, two year moratorium on the use of generative AI in classrooms. This means that for two years, in schools in Toronto:
Students will not use generative AI in classrooms.
Students will not use generative AI for homework.
Because this technology is new, not much is yet known about the long-term impacts of its use on student education. What we do know, however, is deeply alarming. Recent global test results indicated that students who used "AI" tools as part of their education scored over twenty points worse than students who didn't - equivalent to falling a full year behind in school.
These applications are also regularly in the news for being addictive, unreliable, even driving people into what's known as "AI psychosis". Meanwhile, the much-hyped benefits have yet to materialize.
Students are not test subjects for American tech companies to test their products on. It's time to push pause on generative AI in the classroom for at least two years, until a real, comprehensive, and evidence-based risk/benefit analysis can be completed.
